Kentucky’s September soundtrack: Where music, mountains and bourbon meet
By Travel South /  July 29, 2025

From the peaks of the Appalachian Mountains to the banks of the Ohio River, music is more than a pastime in Kentucky—it’s a way of life. The legacy of legends like Bill Monroe, Loretta Lynn and the Everly Brothers still echoes through the hills and hollers, and today, their influence lives on in every pluck of a banjo and every soulful lyric sung on stage.

While Kentucky offers live music in cozy cafes and iconic concert halls year-round, September turns the volume up across the state. During the month Kentucky transforms into a stage of epic proportions, drawing music lovers from far and wide for a trio of can’t-miss festivals:

BOURBON AND BEYOND, Louisville, September 11–14
Where world-class bourbon meets headlining acts in a celebration of flavour, sound, and Southern soul. Big names this year include The Lumineers, Noah Kahan, Benson Boon, Jack White, Cage the Elephant, Goo Good Dolls and Phish.

LOUDER THAN LIFE, Louisville, September 18–21
The nation’s largest rock festival returns with four days of high-octane performances, turning Louisville into the loudest place on earth. This year’s lineup includes Deftones, Rob Zombie, Evanescence, A Perfect Circle and Slayer.

HEALING APPALACHIA Ashland, September 19–20
Rooted in purpose and powered by song, this heartfelt festival uplifts Appalachian communities through music, hope, and connection. Chris Stapleton & Tyler Childers will grace the stage this year.

Of course, a trip to Kentucky isn’t complete without exploring the local bourbon scene. It’s easy to combine a festival with a distillery visit to taste some of the world’s best bourbon. As the birthplace of bourbon, some amazing distilleries are easy to follow along the Kentucky Bourbon Trail, which offers tasting opportunities, tours on the process of making bourbon whiskey and more. Be sure to pick up a bottle to bring home to share with family and friends.

Kentucky also has lots to offer in the great outdoors and late summer/early fall is the perfect time to visit. Travellers can explore caves, hike through forests and gorges, admire the Appalachian Mountains, chase waterfalls and even get some thrills rock climbing and ziplining.

Popular destinations include Mammoth Cave National Park, Red River Gorge, Pine Mountain and Cumberland Falls State Resort Park. For unique stays, picturesque glamping sites and treehouse accommodations are available.
